In April the city council committed to achieve stretching carbon reductions totalling 35% of 2008/09 levels by 2014, going significantly beyond national targets set in the Climate Change Act. The Carbon Management Action Plan demonstrates the Council’s commitment to creating the UK’s Environment Capital and working at a local level to contribute to the UK’s Climate Change Act (2008).
The carbon reduction target and associated action plan follows completion of the Carbon Trust Local Authority Carbon Management Programme, which commenced in April 2009. During the programme PCC’s 2008/9 baseline emissions were calculated from energy consumption across its operations: buildings, schools, street lighting, culture & leisure facilities and fleet vehicles. The baseline emissions were 34,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, enough to fill the cathedral approximately 200 times.
