Not long to go before the Green Festival 2009 kicks off. Two weeks of fun, events, competitions and activities to get the whole city involved.
The Festival which is organised by Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) starts on 23rd May at 10am with the big launch event in Peterborough City Centre.
This will see three areas of the City Centre transformed into hubs dedicated to this years’ Festival theme – grow it, cook it, eat it. The idea is to get local people growing their own food, eating more fruit and veg, buying from local farmers, and cooking from scratch for healthier meals.
Bridge Street will host an ‘ask the experts’ tent where you can put your gardening questions to the team from Garden Answers magazine. There will be the opportunity to get your hands dirty and do some planting with seeds, pots and compost provided. Children can plant a seed and take it home with them to watch it grow. Staff from Notcutts Garden Centre will be on hand to help plant out a huge construction garden which will be a magical spectacle celebrating home-grown food and flowers.
In the Cathedral Grounds (just through the archway) there will be the opportunity to learn about cooking vegetables and making healthy meals. There will also be willow weaving, bird-box making, nature trails, pond dipping and lots more to keep youngsters entertained.
The third hub, in Queensgate, is where you’ll find me on the day because it’s the ‘eat it’ part of the Festival. You can watch chefs from Riverford organic veg from Sacrawell farm (the organic veg box people) cook food, and then get stuck in with some tasting!
There will also be tree planting and a host of other green fingered activities for the whole family at the Green Backyard community garden (next to the Apex Building on London Road). And Lite FM will be hosting the Bridge Street stage which will feature the fantastic Eden Project junk band making music from rubbish!
After the excitement of the launch day there are two weeks of fun things to look forward to...
Highlights include:
• Wet and Wild weekend at Flag Fen, 24th and 25th May, all day.
• Swish (posh clothes swap for ladies), 26th May, 6pm.
• Eco-fashion show, Queensgate, 28th May, 6pm.
• Screening of film The Age of Stupid, 1st June, John Clare Theatre-Central Library, 6pm.
• Professional bike race organised by Riverford organic veg boxes, Sacrewell Farm (featuring freshly cooked sausages, strawberry picking, farm animals and tractor rides!), 7th June, all day.
The full festival listing with details of all events can be found here.
