Healthy meal help, cooking demonstrations, street dancing and bite size exercise sessions

These are all part of a National Childhood Obesity Week events taking place in Peterborough next week.

To raise awareness of National Childhood Obesity Week, NHS Peterborough are holding a Change4Life event at Cathedral Square on Wednesday 7 July, starting at 9:30am and running until 4pm.

The event includes:
-cooking demonstrations from Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) promoting healthy meal options and interactive healthy lifestyle activities
-street dancing from nacro, a national organisation helping to reduce crime by changing lives
-a visit from Youth Bus sponsored by local partners to promote NHS Baby and Teen Lifecheck and various with healthy lifestyle and healthy weight activities
-bite-size exercise sessions for children and families from NHS Peterborough public health team
information on Carnegie Weight Management Clubs for children and families 2 to 17 years of age.

The Youth Bus will also be visiting Orton Children's Centre on Tuesday 6 July and Caverstede Children's Centre on Thursday 8 July. The bus includes interactive games at the locations to encourage physical activity.

Dr Andy Liggins, Director of Public Health at NHS Peterborough, said, “In Peterborough, an estimated 30% of children and young people of compulsory school age are overweight or obese, of which up to 16% will be obese. We want to encourage young people and their parents or carers to have a good diet and a healthy lifestyle, which will help them grow well and protect them against chronic illnesses later in life.

“If you want to help your child lose weight and don’t know where to begin, then come at see us at Cathedral Square. We’ll have all the support you need to help you take a step in the right direction.”
