More than 30 motorcyclists who completed a city BikeSafe course will be presented with certificates at the Perkins Learning Centre on Edgerley Road in Fengate, Peterborough on Tuesday 29 June 2010 at 7pm.
The SaferPeterborough partnership has been urging motorcyclists to brush up on their riding skills by attending the free BikeSafe course, which is delivered by Cambridgeshire Constabulary's advanced police motorcyclists.
BikeSafe covers motorcycle control including cornering, positioning, overtaking and group riding. People who went on the course also undertook an assessed ride, under the guidance of a police motorcyclist, to put their new-found skills into practice.
Clair George, road safety officer for the SaferPeterborough partnership, said: "Motorcyclists represent just one per cent of total road traffic but account for 19 per cent of all road user deaths. Last year, 75 motorcyclists were injured on Peterborough roads. In 2008, 493 motorcyclists died and 5,556 were seriously injured in road collisions in Great Britain. The BikeSafe course is a great way for riders to become more aware of their own abilities and improve on their skills with excellent tutorage by advanced police motorcyclists.
“Motorcyclists are 57 times more likely to be injured in serious or fatal crashes than car drivers. The summer brings an increase in the number of motorcycles on our roads and drivers should be more aware of bikes by paying extra attention to the road and their mirrors.”
